Mike has been complaining about having too many roosters lately. We had four young roosters that he killed a month or so ago, but we thought they were hens. They needed to go. But we also have a few roosters that we really haven't been using for breeding. And that's really all they are worth! Well, we partly kept them cause they were also good looking birds! One was Little Chicken, the first chick we ever hatched! Just look at him!
He is such a pretty bird. BUT.......
I came home yesterday to find out he was put into our dinner!!! Mike put him into a Mexican Chicken Lasagna! Don't get me wrong! He was quite delicious. Mike almost never makes a meal I don't like. But he had to feel bad for killing a chicken we raised. I know I did. But, isn't that what they are really for? He wasn't a pet. He and one other rooster got took, and one is in the freezer. R.I.P. Little Chicken!

What? They aren't pets? Lord, don't tell Skippy that! He thinks he's my third son!
Randy you are so funny. Mmmm chicken lasagna sounds so yummy.
You have been quite busy I see. Wow that must have been some bike to be worth that kinda money.
Glad to hear you are off to visit your mom and dad. Hope you both have a wonderful weekend and be careful.
My eyes! MY EYES!!! Randy!!! Don't show me a beautiful little creature like that and then make me picture him in lasagna!
I'm not hanging around with you anymore . . .
today.
hrmph!
LITTLE LA_SAG_NEE Yum Yum
(Must be the first time Little and Lasagne has been used in the same sentence.) LOL

Glad you two are getting out of the house for a bit.
We are sticking close to do Easter with our boys. Happy Easter!

:O Yum. Chicken.
Dear Randy and Mike, Try as I might, I found it very difficult to imagine your [not so] Little Chicken as a Lasagne [Mexican or otherwise!!]. Of course you have to eat your chicken, but is it wise to give them names? That must make it much more difficult [not to say personal] when the inevitable day comes.
I am so pleased to be catching up with you after my small holiday. I do hope that you both have a wonderful Easter with your parents.
We do have a pet chicken or two. But the general rule is lay eggs, fertilize eggs, or get on the plate with the eggs. Renee, I could have shown a pic of the lasagna! Welcome home Edith Hope. Hope your trip was nice!
Randy -- I'm so impressed by your taste and restraint. Not.
I have never had chicken lasagna, sounds great!
Saying a little prayer for Little Chicken....but I guess it's like rabbits...You can't keep 'em All...
Have a great weekend you two!!

o.k...that was a bit much for a born and bred city girl. Didn't you know meat/chicken/fish all come from the "meat" market. It never was anything else and was never alive...gah!
You guys are true farmers! This city girl couldn't imagine eating anything I named. ;)
R.I.P. in the Chicken Boys bellies.
Surely that is an April Fool joke?
You have to do what you have to do. You are looking at your flock in the most practical way.
I'm not saying thinning the flock is easy and I haven't had to do it yet, but unless you want to wind up having a home for the aged chickens it has to be done.
I only hope when I have to cull that I can do it.
The lasagna sounds yummy!
Happy Easter
I guess you have to keep telling yourself they are not pets, and I agree, don't look into their eyes....like the sound of the chicken lasagna though......

Oh my!!!! R.I.P. Little Chicken.
Have a great weekend and a Happy Easter.
Chicken Lasagne? Sounds good. I don't normally name the ones that are... Freezer bound. Or in this case, dinner bound. I only make exception for very annoying cattle. Hence the one we had named "Hamburger".
Just sayin'.

Even though I think you are truly horrid for eating him....I have an award for you! xxx
Yes, chickens are raised for eggs and dinner. If people make pets out of them then I suppose they would be hard to eat. I take good care of our chickens, but they are not pets. The lasagna sounds very good.
I'm giggling my head off here and on my way to warn the " girls " that they'd better behave - or else !
Did he taste good ?
Oh gosh, you're braver than I. I guess we need to accept responsibility for what we eat, but once I know them and hold them I'm sunk. I read an old Elizabeth Coatsworth book that featured a farm lady who could never kill one of her chickens. They about took over.
If you get a chance visit my blog for a pic of the best chicken tractor ever. It was at the SF Flower and Garden Show.
Love your posts,

Just stumbled upon your blog and I must say that you have pointed out the one problem I am afraid I may have when we are finally able to raise chickens.
Caring for them and then... eating! them. But, that is what they are here for.
And since we will be retired when we start raising them, we will indeed be eating them.
Looks like you have a gorgeous place! Happy Easter to you! :)
Eating your own bred makes me think of the Donner Party. Uck!
Thats it...you are not my friend anymore!!!!! :(
;) lol

...nor mine! I can't believe you put a picture of him up and then said all within the same breath that you ate him!
You actually hatched him too...? What makes a pet? If that isn't then I don't know what is!
Glad you had a nice Easter - and didn't eat get to eat any of your nieces and nephews!!!!
Ever since I wrote my second comment here I have worried that I hurt your feelings. You know I was only kidding, right? I hope.
Well, good. I'm glad we're good. I wouldn't hurt your feelings for all the world.
