Christmas Is Here

It's Christmas time!  And my Christmas Cactus is in full bloom!!  This is probably my last post til after Christmas.  My pigeons got attacked by a small hawk the other morning, but he got none.  He landed in the same pine tree as that owl.  Mike shot at him with the .22 and he flew off.  He has not returned after a week now.  Something attacked my white silkie hen.  Mike went out the other morning and her right wing was covered in blood.  We moved her and her rooster into a better, drier coop, put some salve on her wing and put a next box in for her.  She immediately started scratching and pecking as I threw her some feed.  I later found out that a man's dog had gotten back there and attacked her.  He came by to apologize and offer payment for her.  We turned down the payment, but agreed to exchange fresh eggs in the spring for fresh bacon.  She seems to be doing okay.  Fingers crossed.  I went holiday shopping with my mom this past Saturday.  What a nightmare that turned out to be.  It wasn't too bad, except my mom likes to shop for herself.  She could spend hours in a store picking out all the things she wants only to put most of it back as she checks out.  She did this on Saturday, as well.  So neither of us finished out shopping.  She was going to return on Sunday with my dad, but with his leg as bad as it is, I'm not sure how that turned out.  I still have three nephews to buy for.  I will probably stop to buy those tonight on my way home.  I tried to get a pic of my new niece.  She was born on Thursday, December 17, 2009.  She was 7 pounds 1 ounce and 21 inches long.  Her name is Jolissa Dawn.   I haven't seen her yet, except a cell phone pic my brother sent to me.  It's his third child, but only daughter.  I will get pics at Christmas and post them!

Well, you all have a wonderful Christmas!  Be blessed and I will see y'all after the holiday!!

Pretty cactus. I love those plants - they are so pretty when they bloom. Your mom sounds like me - sorry. When I go shopping I have to stop to look at stuff I like and take it to purchase only to lay it back down. Hope you finish your shopping tonight. Merry Christmas to you and your family and keep the chickens safe and warm.

Congrats on being an uncle again! In a house full of testosterone on this end (even the dog), a little estrogen infusion would be nice every now and then. I'll have to count on my hens for that!

Have a great Christmas!

Those hawks are just plain mean! We have so many of them here always after the chickens and ducks.

The hawks are just doing what they do..., the dog, on the other hand, needs to be confined. Very nice agreement with the dog's owner.Hope your chicken is OK.
Congratulations on being a uncle. What a nice time of year and what a Christmas present.
Merry Christmas to you all...

You've had troubles in the coop, too, but your cactus is really lovely. I hope you enjoy your holiday!

Beautiful cactus.

Yes, I'm new to chickens, just got my ladies on December 1st. They're just coming of age to start laying so I don't expect too much to happen until spring.

I have six now and if I can find a market for eggs, I'll get some chicks and maybe a roo in the spring if I can get housing together for them.

Merry Christmas!

I'm so glad your pigeons are okay and that your little silkie will be okay. A raccoon squeezed his ample behind through our egg door (which has since been screwed shut!), but thankfully our dog barked his head off and rousted us and all concerned out of bed to see what was the clatter! Miraculously, that horrid scoundrel hadn't gotten any of our chickens -- who had run out of the coop into their enclosed feeding area. He was probably still reeling from his aching arse (that was a tiny egg door!). Our poor little girls wouldn't go in their coop -- even to sleep -- for nearly a week. At least they weren't devoured.

Your cactus is beautiful. My nine year old boy loves them for some reason, and I buy him one each Christmas and he slowly kills it with kindness just in time for me to buy him a new one the next Christmas.

And your pets are adorable. Cats have so much character, and it looks like your doggies do, too. So cute!

Congrats on being an uncle again! A baby for Christmas . . . I always thought that would be especially poignant -- and busy!

Well, enough chatting frome me.

Merry Christmas, Mike and Randy. It will be fun getting to know you better in the new year. Cheers!
